Dacita wins the Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington Park under Irad Ortiz Jr.

Chilean-bred Dacita and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. teamed up to win Saturday’s $600,000 Beverly D. Stakes on Arlington Million Day at Arlington Park, giving trainer Chad Brown his third consecutive victory and fourth overall in the Grade 1 Win and You’re In Breeders’ Cup challenge race for the Filly & Mare Turf division. Argentine-bred Dona Bruja and Great Britain-bred Grand Jete finished in a dead-heat for second, followed by Rainha Da Bateria in the field of 10 filly and mare turf runners.

Dacita, a 6-year-old Scat Daddy mare owned by Sheep Pond Partners and Bradley Thoroughbreds, covered 1 3/16 miles on firm turf in 1:55.49.

Ortiz allowed Dacita, who broke from the inside post position, to lag near the back of the field for the opening six furlongs as Frankie Dettori and Zipessa set the pace through fractions of :23.84, :49.34 and 1:14.81. Ortiz moved Dacita off the rail down the backstretch and in the clear entering the far turn, She swung five wide into the stretch as Dona Bruja and Declan Cannon moved to the front, the mile in 1:38.11, and Dacita out-kicked her rival to the wire.

While Dacita was racing clear on the outside, another Chad Brown trainee, Grand Jete, was bottled up on the inside under jockey Joel Rosario. She had to take up abruptly in midstretch, then swung to the outside and closed fastest of all to finish on even terms with Dona Bruja.

Brown won the 2015 running of the Beverly D with Watsdachances – co-owned by Bradley Thoroughbreds – and captured last year’s renewal with Sea Calisi. He also won with Stacelita in 2011 and with four wins has won the Beverly D more times than any other trainer.

Dacita was winning for the 10th time in 19 starts and for the first time in 2017. This was her second G1 victory since coming to the U.S. in 2015 from Chile, where she was a multiple G1 winner. Dacita’s first U.S. G1 came in the 2016 Diana Stakes at Saratoga. She finished ninth in the 2015 Filly & Mare Turf after defeating champion Tepin in the G2 Ballston Spa at Saratoga in her U.S. debut in August 2015.
